Zoo tours and encounters return

Taronga Western Plains Zoo has welcomed back several tours and encounters and is once again offering these unique experiences to guests. These tours and encounters had been placed temporarily on hold during the Zoo’s closure last year and subsequent covid-19 restrictions.

The Savannah Safari, Early Morning Walk, Pride Lands Patrol, Hippo Encounter and Giraffe Encounter are all now operational. Guests have been enjoying these additional activities during the summer school holidays, with the majority of experiences resuming in late December.

“Our animal encounters have been on hold since we temporarily closed in late March 2020. As restrictions slowly eased we have been able to re-introduce them,” said Taronga Western Plains Zoo Director, Steve Hinks.

“We have a number of covid safe measures in place to ensure our animal encounters can operate again in a safe manner for our staff, guests and wildlife.”

“Our animal encounters and tours are always a highlight of the zoo experience and offer real connections with our wildlife. We’re so pleased they are back,” said Steve.

The Hippo Encounter is the newest encounter added to the different experiences available at Taronga Western Plains Zoo and is receiving rave reviews. Guests enjoy getting up close with one of the Zoo’s resident Hippos as well as learning more about this species from zoo keepers.

The return of the Early Morning Walk has also been popular. Guided by Zoo volunteers the walk takes guests behind-the-scenes before the zoo opens to the public. Guests learn about the zoo’s different animals and the conservation programs whilst seeing a unique aspect of the zoo. Early Morning Walks are available on Saturdays and Sundays with extra days available during school holidays.

Tours such as the Savannah Safari and Pride Lands Patrol are a unique experience to add to a visit to the Zoo. Both tours take guests into an exhibit and drive in amongst the animals. The Pride Lands Patrol takes guests into the Lion exhibit in a purpose built truck whilst the Savannah Safari provides guests the opportunity to see Giraffe, Zebra, White Rhino and Eland on the African Savannah.

The Giraffe Encounter is the perfect opportunity to get up close and personal with the tallest residents of the Zoo, best of all guests can feed the Giraffe a carrot whilst learning about this majestic experience.
Places on all encounters and tours are limited. To experience one of Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s tours or animal encounters book at the ticketing counter or by contacting 6881 1425.
